Why?
Digital filmmaking has revolutionised the process of delivering moving images to an audience. As of the time of writing traditional film is still superior in quality but digital formats are empowering people who would otherwise struggle to realise their vision. The beauty of the celluloid moving image is king but digital media is catching up.
Simon Cooper, the driving creative force behind Whole Hog, was inspired to plunge into movie making after spending several years involved in the computer games industry. It could take years to produce a video game and very often that game could be canned just months before completion. It can be a soul-destroying experience. Simon also wanted more artistic control and was becoming frustrated at the limitations of the available technology in games. Essentially, in games the camera is re-invented afresh for each new game "engine".
Inspired by the work of filmmakers like the Coen brothers, Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez and other "can-do" director/producers Simon wanted to bring stories to the screen, all the while enjoying the artistic journey, in a kinetic, urgent style. The arrival of affordable filmmaking in the digital realm has helped Whole Hog achieve its goals. |
